The new veterinarians who were hired to perform euthanasia at the Sumner County animal shelter are covering up the lenses of surveillance cameras.

The vets were hired after an I-Team investigation revealed Dr. William Baber was putting animals to death using an injection into the heart without sedation.

Now veterinarians are saying they made a deal with the recently deceased Sumner County executive Hank Thompson to cover up the cameras to avoid future controversy.

Animal advocates said once they learned of it, they alerted sheriff's officials.

The interim county executive, Ragan Hall, said he asked the doctors about the secrecy.

"They said, 'Yeah, we cover them up because we don't want video of us euthanizing animals all over the TV,'" said Hall.

Veterinarians Nathan and David Clariday, a father/son team from Mount Juliet, said they shielded the cameras because they don't want euthanasia to become a public spectacle.

They also said they will not be returning to the Sumner County animal shelter. The county executive was interviewing potential replacements on Wednesday afternoon.
