According to a press release, the indictment charges Mendenhall with seeking to arrange the killings of Metro Police Sgt. Pat Postiglione, Detective Lee Freeman and three witnesses.

Mendenhall, 57, a truck driver from Albion, Ill., is charged in Nashville with the June 26, 2007, shooting death of Sara Nicole Hulbert whose body was found in a parking lot of Truck Stops of America on North First Street.

He was arrested by Postiglione and Freeman at the same truck stop on July 12, 2007.

Since that arrest, Mendenhall has been charged with killing three other women, including one in Lebanon, Tenn. The former truck driver remains a suspect in at least two other homicide cases in the United States.

The new indictment charges Mendenhall with soliciting to kill the detectives and witnesses while confined in the Metro Jail.

"Allegations of retaliation or planned retribution against police officers or witnesses are extremely serious and will be immediately and vigorously investigated," said Metro Police Chief Ronal Serpas. "Such conduct cannot and will not be tolerated by this police department."

Police said Mendenhall tried to get a man named Roy McLauglin, who was in jail on charges of property theft, to kill some of the five people.

Police said another man named Mike Jenkins was also asked by Mendenhall to kill for money.

Mendenhall is being held without bond.
