FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- A traffic stop over a missing taillight turned into a violent police chase through Brentwood into Franklin late Monday night.
Video: Pursuit Ends In Crash Near Franklin SquareThe incident began as normal traffic stop. Police said an officer pulled over James Ferrall because he had a taillight out on his car.But when the officer went back to his car to check Ferrall’s information, police said, Ferrall rammed the patrol car with his car and fled from the scene.
"I think what the suspect was probably trying to do was deploy the officer's airbag," said Brentwood police Officer Jeff Hughes.Police said the officer gave chase as Ferrall zipped through Brentwood on Highway 31 headed toward Franklin. Speeds went from 70 mph to over 100 mph, police said.Brentwood police said they quickly learned that Ferrall was a wanted man because of seven outstanding warrants out of Davidson County on robbery, assault, theft and burglary charges and one warrant in Georgia.During the chase, Ferrall picked up several more charges of speeding, fleeing police and running several red lights."They never know what they're going to encounter when they stop someone for a minor traffic violation such as this," Hughes said.Ferrall gave up at about 2 a.m. when he lost control on a curb in downtown Franklin and crashed into a light pole. Officers got out of their cars after Ferrall hit the pole, but Ferrall almost ran over an officer before he crashed again, police said.In the end, no officers were hurt and one patrol car sustained minor damage.Ferrall was seriously injured but was recovering in a local jail.Antioch resident Ferrall faces six new charges after Monday night's chase, including aggravated assault on an officer and driving a stolen car.
