NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- After their destination wedding in Jamaica, a Nashville couple still hasn't received their marriage certificate.
Video: Couple Wonders If Jamaican Marriage Was ValidScott and Stacy Keith had a ceremony, exchanged vows and cut their wedding cake, but they still don't have the legal proof that they're married. In April, the couple went to a Holiday Inn in Jamaica and paid thousands for a destination wedding. But the trouble began shortly after the ceremony.
Their reception was supposed to be on the beach, but when they arrived after the ceremony they found a party in its place. The couple was told they could have the reception inside, but they would have to share the facility with another wedding party."They're like in the center of the restaurant, we're kind of like in the corner somewhere," Scott Keith said. There was no cake, champagne or decorations for the reception."I think the whole family was kind of upset," he said. They decided to have a reception the next day.But the trouble didn't end in Jamaica. Several weeks later, the couple was still waiting for their marriage certificate to arrive in the mail. Because Scott Keith is in the military, he needs the certificate to file government paperwork."She's frustrated. I'm very stressed," Scott Keith said. The hotel was supposed to handle the paperwork, but the Keiths are having to deal with the matter on their own."They still don't know anything, can't find them," he said.Months into a new marriage, the couple’s patience is already being tested."When you're getting married and everything, you know you should have people already taking care of that so you're good to go," Scott Keith said. The Keiths could get married at the Nashville courthouse and get a marriage certificate right away, but they don't want to spend any more money.Channel 4's Marc Stewart said he gave a Holiday Inn spokeswoman the Keiths' information and that he hoped to hear from the couple soon. The U.S. does recognize Jamaican marriage certificates.
