NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The mother of a Nashville woman who is accused of killing her husband said her daughter is an emotional wreck.
Diane Sanders said her daughter, Kelley Cannon, is in confinement in the Davidson County Jail. Cannon is charged with the strangling death of her husband, Jim Cannon.Sanders said she believes her daughter is innocent even though an affidavit said evidence at the scene implicates Cannon in her husband's death.
"It's absolutely devastating," Sanders said.Jim and Kelley Cannon were in divorce proceedings at the time of his death."Her husband was like my son, and he and I were very, very close," Sanders said. "We spoke every day for at least a month. Two or three times a day, we spoke."Kelley Cannon was at Sanders' home Thursday morning when police came and arrested her.Pictures of Kelley Cannon in every stage of her life are all over Sanders’ home, but her mugshot is the one most familiar to the public.Sanders said she has spoken once with her daughter since she was put in jail."Right now, she's not doing very well. She's upset. She’s in jail, and she's called me and she’s crying, and she can’t stand it, and she’s upset," she said.On June 23, a housekeeper found Jim Cannon's body inside an upstairs closet of the couple’s Green Hills home.Court filings also document Kelley Cannon's history of substance abuse.Attorney John Hollins Jr. is a longtime friend who was representing Jim Cannon in the divorce."A lot of where this all ends depends on the criminal charges. You know, yesterday, Mrs. Cannon was charged with homicide. And really, until we know whether she’s going to be convicted or not convicted on that will dictate what all is going on in the other courts," he said. The Cannons have three young children who are staying with relatives. The couple’s home and estate are tied up in probate court.
