LaVergne, Tenn. -- A Rutherford County man was arrested after being accused of trying to kill his estranged wife and her family by burning their home down overnight.
Police said Samuel A. Jenkins, 34, of Lascassas, Tenn., set the back and front of a home on fire at Finegan Court in LaVergne around midnight. His estranged wife, her parents, a 5-year-old child and a 3-day-old baby were inside but were able to escape safely.
The wife's father jumped from a second-story balcony and was able to rescue the other four people using a ladder.Police said Jenkins was also outside the home and started shooting at the family members. Despite the fire and shooting, everyone in the family escaped injury."The house is a total loss. The thing about it is we could have lost five people in this house fire," said LaVergne Police Chief Ted Boyd.Eleven homes in the neighborhood were evacuated because authorities were afraid the fire would ignite gas lines, but that never occurred."How much hate could be inside one person that would make them want to kill that many people? I grieve for the family," said neighbor Mike Dotson.Jenkins was later arrested at a Kmart store in Smyrna with burns on his legs. Two firefighters were also slightly injured while battling the blaze but were expected to be OK.Jenkins is facing five counts of attempted first-degree murder, arson and a violation of an order of protection.
