"Cullin just turned 9 months on the first," she said.

Six months ago, she said she started experiencing pain in her right breast.

"I just thought it was a strained muscle, and I read and read at home and cancer is not supposed to hurt," she said.

She ended up having a double mastectomy. She can't pick up her baby son, but with the support of her husband and two other children she is undergoing chemotherapy.

"My right arm underneath has 25 lymph nodes, and 20 of those were cancerous," she said.

Bolden-Wombel said community awareness about breast cancer is so important.

"Cancer is nowhere in our family," she said. "I fall under 4 percent of the population, that is just bad luck."

One way residents can help make others aware is to plaster the message on the back of their car.

The state has approved the production of a specialty pink ribbon license plate.

"When people see that license plate, hopefully it will remind them to get their mammogram, to do their monthly self-exams and to go on an annual basis for their clinical exams," said Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation representative Cate Hamilton.

So far, 850 people have signed up and paid their $35 for the specialty plate, but 1,000 people have to pre-order the plate before the state will produce the tag. The proceeds will go to the six Susan G. Komen chapters in Tennessee. The funds will be used to support treatment and educational programs.

June 30 is the deadline to get the money in for the plates.

"A week is not too late. A lot can be done in a week's time," Bolden-Wombel said.

On Saturday, volunteers will also be handing out applications at some area Kroger stores.
