Since Marcia Trimble's death, only one man other man, Jeffrey Womack, has been charged with her death.

Womack lives in middle Tennessee and for the first time in three decades, he said he feels his name is finally cleared.

"He said, and I wrote it down, because I knew you were going to ask me. 'I'm glad they charged the right person.' That's all he said," said Womack’s attorney John Hollins Sr.

Womack was a 15-year-old neighborhood friend of Trimble, 9, and he later became the primary suspect in her death.

Trimble disappeared in 1975 while delivering Girl Scout cookies. Her body was found in a garage about a month later. Four years after the child’s death, police arrested Womack.

"They did that child (Womack) wrong. It was just pressure for a police department to have somebody," said Womack’s former baby sitter Joel Wilson.

Wilson said the arrest took a toll on Womack's entire family. Womack’s father suffered a heart attack, and his mother felt pressured to move.

Though charges against Womack were eventually dropped, the shadow of doubt was already cast.

"Jeffrey will always have that on him, and it was all because a police department bungled the case; I mean bungled it. And then they had to tie it on somebody, and I really feel strongly about that. And it bothers me still," said Wilson.

Womack is now working with authorities in the case. His attorney said they have questioned him at length about Barrett.

"They want to know what he knows about Jerome Barrett and whether he'd ever seen anybody out there. To his knowledge, he hasn't," said Hollins.

It took 33 years, but police finally believe him and have granted him immunity; the first step toward restoring his reputation.

"He's felt there was a cloud of suspicion over him all these years, and I think there has been," said Hollins.

Womack declined to talk about the case, but his attorney said he may change his mind once the case goes to trial.
