NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Where in middle Tennessee are residents most likely to get hit by a tornado? What county is most susceptible to the storms?
Video: Which Tennessee Areas Are Most Tornado Prone?Channel 4 along with the National Weather Service took a look at a half century of reported tornadoes and which areas are the most susceptible.Tennessee tornadoes kill more people per tornado than anywhere else in the country. The worst tornado in state history was an F5 that hit Lawrence County in 1998.
Over the years, Channel 4 has gathered a substantial amount lot of tornado pictures from Lawrence County. But according to weather data compiled by the National Weather Service over the past 50 years, Lawrence County doesn't have the most confirmed tornadoes. In the last half century, middle Tennessee's most populated county, Davidson, actually has the most reported tornadoes with 25. Sumner and Rutherford counties come in at No. 2 with No. 24 reported tornadoes.Lawrence County is tied with Montgomery with 23 tornadoes.Data from the National Weather Service also indicate that Nashville ranks No. 1 in tornadoes reported per square mile in middle Tennessee.Larry Vanozzi with the NWS said Nashville ranks at the top with 7.4 per 100 square miles. Trousdale, Wilson and Rutherford are the next counties behind Davidson in the category of tornadoes reported per square mile. The public should be aware that since Davidson is the most populated county in middle Tennessee, this can affect the data since more people obvioulsy would be able to spot more tornadoes.
