Current Minister Says Allegations Are False

Some women are coming forward and claiming they were sexually abused as children at their church.

Also, they said leaders of their church knew about it.

"I was still required to go to church with the man who abused me. He made sexual gestures at me when I was walking down the aisle," plaintiff Jennifer Meier-Beita said.

The women are former members of Christian Gospel Temple. In the early 1990s, approximately 400 members moved from Chino, Calif., to White House, Tenn.

They said members were strongly influenced by church leaders. Meier-Beita was 8 years old when she told her mother that a church member had sexually abused her.

However, instead of telling police, her mother went to their pastor.

"I was informed that he abused someone prior to me and a minister was informed of that, and I also know that after I came forward he abused other people as well, and it continued and nobody stopped," said Meier-Beita.

Cheryl Morrell claims that that same pastor knew that her grandfather, who was a leader in the church, abused her, her sister and younger cousin.

Now all four women have filed lawsuits, claiming the church is partially responsible.

"They want to convince people that, ‘How can you hold us responsible for this? How can you do that?’ Well, because they were in a position of authority and they knew about my grandfather and they did not take appropriate action,” said Morrell

Channel 4 spoke with church's current minister, Steve Farmer, over the phone. He said he has only been served with one lawsuit.

Farmer said the church is not trying to hide anything. Their services are streamed live over the internet, and their doors are always open to the public.

"We believe that the allegations against Christian Gospel Temple are not true or correct,” said Farmer.

The lawsuits have been filed in California court. The alleged abuse happened before the church moved to Tennessee.

The two men accused of abuse no longer belong to the church.

The women who are making the claims have also left Christian Gospel Temple, but they said they have little to no contact with family and friends who are still members.

All four women are seeking unspecified damages of more than $25,000.
