Robert Jason Burdick made the not guilty plea in court on Wednesday as he faced a judge in Davidson County for the first time since his arrest on May 1.

Burdick is suspected of committing a series of rapes from 1994 until 2008 in Davidson, Williamson and Wilson counties.

Currently, Burdick faces seven counts of aggravated rape, three attempted rape charges, one especially aggravated kidnapping charge and two aggravated burglary charges in Davidson County.

Police said many of the “wooded rapist” attacks happened after it rained, and prosecutor Roger Moore said Tuesday night's weather had him thinking about how residents feel since Burdick is in custody.

"Last night, the thought occurred to me when it started raining…that I suspect a whole lot of folks were sleeping better than they had in years," he said.

Burdick also told a judge that he had spoken to many attorneys and was not able to afford any of them, so he was appointed a public defender Wednesday.
