NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee death row inmate Paul Dennis Reid was in court on Monday for a hearing to see if he is competent enough to be executed.Reid was convicted in 1997 of killing seven people at various fast food restaurants in middle Tennessee. He has been sitting on death row for the past 11 years. He was scheduled to be executed in January 2008, but it was delayed for issues over his mental competency.Reid has said he wants to be executed, but his family continues to appeal the courts, saying he does not understand the legal issues that are involved.
"The same quality of delusion and psychotic thinking was clear in both of these interviews. Dr. Martel, for example, in his report, came to the diagnostic conclusion that Mr. Reid continues to have a delusion disorder," said psychiatrist George Woods. The hearing was expected to continue through Tuesday. People both in favor and against the execution of Reid are expected to take the stand.Victims of Reid have said that they cannot close this chapter in their lives until he is executed.
