NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The two biggest proposed building projects in middle Tennessee have new developments on Friday.
Video: Developer Pushes New West Nashville ProjectDeveloper Tony Giarratana, Nashville's version of Donald Trump, has one massive project that is behind schedule but is already looking at a project in west Nashville that may affect more people. The 70-story Signature Tower in downtown Nashville has been discussed for almost two years, but Giarratana has his eyes on another project as well.
The developer said on Friday that the Signature Tower is on hold for the moment because of the credit issues that the entire country is facing due to the slumping economy.Giarratana remains positive that the 70-story, mixed-use skyscraper will be built. He said it looks like he will not be able to start the project until the housing market bottoms out and banks feel good again about loans for residential developments."We don't know how long that's going to take," said Giarratana. Developer Pushes New West Nashville Project The May Town Center is a $4 billion corporate, residential and retail park in the Bells Bend area of west Nashville. The development would be located across the Cumberland River from the new Nashville West shopping center.Giarratana said this project can be compared to a similar complex in Reston, Va., which is a combination of retail, corporate campus, residential and recreational use.It would entail building a new bridge over the Cumberland that would come off of Briley Parkway and Centennial Boulevard. For the project to be built, the property would still need to have to gain an approved zoning change from Metro. Some Metro council members are considered the rezoning proposal carefully because they are worried that Bells Bend development will compete with downtown. The May Town project has undergone some changes to its master plan after criticism from neighbors. It's moved the proposed bridge from Annex Avenue to Centennial Boulevard. The developers also agreed to move the corporate campuses deeper into the property and promises bigger green space areas throughout the property.
