NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Gas prices are not showing signs of decreasing or even leveling off and regular unleaded is getting close to $4 a gallon in Nashville.
Paying $4 for a gallon of gas might not be far off. One station in Nashville has gas well above the national average, which is posting a record high of $3.75 per gallon.A Shell station in south Nashville is located right off the interstate near Trousdale Drive. There's usually a wait for gas, but on Wednesday, prices were scaring some customers away.
"It's ridiculous," said Marty Maitland. The $3.75 a gallon price is the highest ever in the Nashville area and well above the national average of around $3.60."It’s killing me, absolutely killing me, my budget, killing my food, killing everything," said Sam Dozier. In many other places, the prices aren’t far behind with several places sitting at $3.71.About a month ago, experts warned that gas prices could reach $4 a gallon by summer, but with some already at $3.75, that could happen even sooner. We found just a few people stopping by to pay the highest price in town. Maitland said he only filled up here Wednesday because he didn’t have much of a choice."I was about out, and I didn’t want to get on the interstate without the amount of gas I need to get to my office," Maitland said. And no gas around the mid-state may be cheap, but Stewart’s Ferry Pike is where drivers might pay the least. In that area, three gas stations just of Interstate 40 have gas at $3.41."You got to shop, if you don’t you will end up paying the higher prices," said driver Robert Curtis. The president and Congress are debating legislation that would urge oil companies to ease the burden on consumers. And at least one presidential candidate is talking about a gas tax holiday for sometime in the future.
