Two people are charged with reckless endangerment for driving around with a 16-year-old in the trunk of a Toyota Corolla, according to Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies.

A 911 call alerted police to the scene after the caller had spotted the boy in the trunk of the car. Officials said they thought the worst in the beginning.

But when the boy got out of the trunk on Peavine Road, Cory McDaniel and Rhonda Howard told the deputies that a big television wouldn’t fit in the trunk, so they put the teen in there and the TV in the back seat.

"He did it voluntarily. It made sense to him too, I guess," said Cumberland County Sheriff Butch Burgess.

The incident happened on Monday. Most residents that heard about what happened are laughing and trying to understand the logic of putting someone in the trunk for the sake of a TV.

"I have no idea. That’s why we charged them like we did," Burgess said.

The 911 caller was a relative who said she saw the boy get in the trunk. One of the people arrested was the boy’s sister.
