NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A large organized crime case is playing out in Nashville.
Video: Members Of Violent Gang Convicted, SentencedEleven members of a gang whose motto is “Kill, Rape, Control" have been convicted while three more await trial. The people were members of the dangerous MS-13 gang, and the people who know gangs best said there is really nothing like them.
"MS-13 works on fear. They’re not your typical gang that sells drugs on the street corner or does anything like that. They don’t work like that. Their whole thing is fear and taking over an area. And they live daily to fight the enemy, and their enemy was any Hispanic in Nashville," said Gary Kemper of Metro’s Gang Suppression Unit. The gang members are not known for drugs, thefts, money laundering or burglaries, they’re just known for violence. When Oscar "The Little Devil" Serrano got out of prison and came back to Nashville in late 2005, he picked up where he left off.He was wanted on multiple counts of slayings and attempted slayings until the Metro Gang Unit arrested 13 members of MS-13 in middle Tennessee in January 2007."Once we felt like we had enough, then, you know, we had to end it because it was getting worse. I mean, it was every weekend I was stopping them, somehow, from committing other crimes. We'd get information they were going to commit a crime, and we spent a lot of time just stopping the crime from being committed. And once it got like where I didn’t feel like I could stop it, along with the ATF's help and the people appointed above me, we finally said, 'Pull the plug,'" Kemper said. The gang held its meetings and initiations under overpasses where the group would beat a new member until another member counted slowly to 13.They also collected membership dues that were sent to members who were already in prison. Prosecutors said they were able to use these meetings and payments to prove that it was organized crime and used racketeering statutes to get longer prison sentences for those who are convicted. So instead of four- and five-year sentences for attempted murder and aggravated assault, MS-13 members are getting 27 years.Eleven are already convicted and serving double-digit-year sentences and the entire gang is behind bars.Metro police said the 14 men and women committed almost half of the violent gang crime in all of Nashville in 2006 and that the violent gang crime rate has decreased since they are gone. The last three MS-13 members, which is a Salvadoran gang, are set for trial in August.
