A Murfreesboro police officer has lost his job after a federal investigation that involved alleged steroid use.

Murfreesboro Officer Phillip Hatcher was stripped of his gun and badge on Monday, but Channel 4 News learned on Thursday that he was fired from the department.

In an internal investigation report, Hatcher said he began using steroids before he became a police officer because he wanted to "build up" his body.

Hired by the Murfreesboro Police Department last year, Hatcher said he continued to use steroids until recently.

However, he denies injecting himself while on duty or at the training academy and said he injected himself on his weekend trips at home.

Hatcher has the option to request a hearing on his job with the city manager but must do so by Friday.

He told investigators that after his parents found out about his steroids use, he attempted to wean himself off the drug and the recovery process is ongoing.

Hatcher was just one part of an ongoing city and federal investigation involving other middle Tennessee police officers and state troopers.

The Channel I-Team has also confirmed that a Metro police cadet has resigned after the steroid investigation.

The I-team confirmed police officer trainee, Sena Omer, resigned from the police department earlier this month after being investigated by detectives working on the steroid investigation.

Investigators believe many of these officers, including the three other Metro officers who are being investigated, all worked out at the same gym together.

Those Metro officers have been stripped of their badges and guns.

Two THP Officers On Leave Pending Internal Investigation

Two Tennessee Highway Patrol officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal investigation.

The Department of Safety said Sgt. Larry Hitchcock and Trooper William Futrell, both 36, are under investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility.

Spokeswoman Laura McPherson would not give further details on the investigation, but the Highway Patrol has said it is looking into allegations of troopers using or selling steroids.

The investigation into the two officers started on March 12 after the department received external information about the employees.

Hitchcock began his career as a trooper in January 1994 and was promoted to sergeant in 2003. He is currently assigned to the THP's 3rd District in Nashville and previously worked in Wilson County and the THP Training Center.

Futrell joined the THP as a trooper in January 2005 and is currently working at the THP Training Center. His previous assignment was in District 4 in Hardeman County.
