NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Would you be willing to pay cash for a quicker commute to work or school?
It could soon be an option in Tennessee as the state Legislature paves the way for toll roads to become a reality. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is considering a plan to build a toll bridge over the Cumberland River to connect Sumner County with Nashville.Currently roadwork is funded by the gas tax and motor vehicle registration. The money collected from the tolls would be used to pay for specific projects. The bill allowing for toll roads has already passed the State House but still faces a debate in the Senate. If it's approved, TDOT said they would only consider projects that already have public support."In most instances, toll projects, at least the one presented to us, have been more community based projects that were maybe not high on the priority list for funding, but the local communities saw that as a way to move forward, bring it to fruition without having for wait another 16 years to get the state funding for it," said TDOT spokeswoman Julie Oaks.If the toll road project moves forward, it will take about four years to put in place. The cost for drivers to use the toll road has yet to be determined. In addition to the Sumner-Davidson County bridge proposal, toll projects are being considered in Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga.
