PORTLAND, Tenn. -- With the spring storm season ahead and the deadly storms that hit the area on Feb. 5, one middle Tennessee town is considering getting tornado sirens.
Video: Town Considers Tornado Sirens After StormsCurrently there is only one siren in Sumner County, an area with a population over 130,000.However, the city of Portland is exploring the idea of installing eight sirens at a cost of about $200,000.
City officials are looking at available grants and possibly having residents help with the costs. The cost could be divided out among property owners as a one-time assessment instead of a tax increase.Residents were the ones who asked the mayor to consider sirens.Trousdale and Macon counties, places that were severely hit by tornadoes on Feb. 5, do not have any sirens.
