SMYRNA, Tenn. -- Smyrna police said bones found in January are those of a toddler missing since 2006, and the death is now considered a homicide.
Sgt. Bobby Gibson said Thursday night that DNA tests showed the bones, found in a quarry in the Stones River Battlefield in January, are those of Analyce Guerra, who was 2 years old at the time she disappeared.Channel 4's Marc Stewart first reported on Jan. 11 that the bones were likely those of the child.
Authorities said that there was evidence of force trauma to the girl’s skull.“We have a list of suspects, but there is no one that has been cleared yet in this case, and we’re just moving forward with that investigation,” said Smyrna police Detective Jeff Peach.Analyce was last seen in April 2006 in her family's Smyrna apartment near Stewarts Creek. The child’s mother, Eva Guerra, said her daughter had been asleep on the living room floor about 11 p.m. the night before she was reported missing. Guerra said she awoke to find the child gone and the front door unlocked. The family has said they believe the child was kidnapped.Peach told reporters that "obvious foul play was involved and we have an active homicide investigation at this time."The cause of death has not been released. At one point during the investigation, officials said there was a theory that Analyce had been taken to Guatemala or El Salvador.Since the use of the Amber Alert started in Tennessee in 2003, Analyce is the only case in which the child was not recovered.“We've issued about 48 Amber Alerts, and 47 of those were children were successfully recovered,” said TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm.Sarah Kee used to live next door to the Guerra family. She said her daughters and Analyce played together. She said this is a difficult time, especially for Analyce’s family.“I didn't really want to believe it. I was hoping and praying they would say that wasn't her. It's just awful, just shock,” Kee said.
