Channel 4 first reported on Tuesday night that east precinct Officer Mike Evans, Hermitage precinct Officer Danny Cage and warrants Officer Stephen Reece had been stripped of their guns and badges.

"Currently three members of the police department and members of the community are under a joint police and federal investigation,” said Metro Police Chief Ronal Serpas.

Evans, Cage and Reece all received letters from Metro police that stripped them of all police authority pending the outcome of an investigation into steroid use.

The investigation goes beyond the officers, Channel 4’s Jeremy Finley reported. The Drug Enforcement Agency is in the midst of a large investigation into the manufacturers and distributors of steroids in middle Tennessee, according to Finley’s information.

It is not clear how the three officers are thought to be involved, but Finley confirmed that Reece use to own a health supplement company.

“The partnership between us and the federal agencies will give us a chance to fully explore the allegations,” Serpas said.

The allegations mean the officers cannot go to work and must remain in their homes during normal work hours and also must call into to the chief's office twice per day. The restrictions are in place while investigators try to determine if the officers have taken part in illegal activities.

“We're going to let the investigation run its course and see where it brings us,” Serpas said when he was asked if he was disappointed.

Reece’s attorney said Reece would not be commenting on the investigation at this time. According to their files, none of the officers had serious disciplinary actions taken against them.
