NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- One of Nashville’s most popular shopping areas has added a new feature: voluntary parking meters.
The proceeds collected by the meters at the Hill Center in Green Hills will be donated to the local YMCA.But the meters and their good intentions come with a catch: If someone parks and doesn’t make a donation and leaves their car there for an extended period, the Hill Center reserves the right to tow it.Hill Center officials said an offender would have to obviously abuse the space before they would be towed. But, when a quarter buys half of what it would anywhere else in Nashville, it could be tempting to skip making a donation.“What is it, it’s like 25 cents buys you eight minutes or something? But I probably took 12 minutes, so I'm a scofflaw, I guess,” one man said. The center is on private property, so there are no meter maids. Linda Rue watches from her store and said the look of it all may be doing the trick.“I think that most people are paying attention to it, and I see someone across the street putting money in the meter,” she said.It appears most people will avoid a tow because they feel the meters are taking them for a ride. The Hill Center said it plans to put up signs that will better explain the parking system. A Hill Center representative said all of the money that is not used to maintain the meters will be donated to the YMCA.There is a parking garage at the Hill Center with 1,000 spaces. Most of it is technically reserved for Whole Foods, but a spokesperson there said they don't really enforce it.
