FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Lawmakers in Kentucky are moving forward with a plan that would legalize casino gambling.
Later this week, Kentucky lawmakers are expected to review a proposal to change the state's constitution, clearing the way for games like roulette, blackjack and slots. The town of Franklin, which is located just across the border with Tennessee, is home to Kentucky Downs race track.Officials from the track confirm that the facility is looking into adding a casino, along with a hotel and convention center. The Mayor of Franklin knows his community would benefit as more than 2,000 jobs could be created, jobs that could be attractive to Tennesseans just a few miles away."We're probably one of the few small towns in Kentucky that could be impacted because we have a racetrack here," said Mayor Jim Brown of Franklin, Ky.At the same time there is caution. The mayor wants to make sure his city isn't strained as its deals with more people and more traffic."If we're not able to receive funding from it and pay for all of that change that happens because of it, it could be a real struggle for the city of Franklin," said Brown. If the Legislature passes the casino bills, voters would have to approve a change to the state constitution, making it legal. The governor said casinos would bring hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue over the next two years.Currently horse racing and bingo are both legal in Kentucky.
