The owner of a downtown coffee shop has been arrested in connection in the theft of two Metro Election Commission laptops.

Police said the computers ended up at a downtown coffee and music club called The Muse, which is near the commission.

The owner of The Muse, Randall Logan Cheek, and another man, club employee Russell Rucker, were arrested on Tuesday.

The hard drives of the computers and some other computer components were seized at the club on Jan. 17. The two laptops were found later that night at a home in Goodlettsville, and the man who bought them will not be charged, police said. Police said the man compared the serial numbers of the computers after seeing news reports about the thefts and was about to call police when they called him.

One of the hard drives contained the Social Security number of every registered voter in Davidson County.

Police said Robert Osbourne admitted to the burglary after turning himself in and is being held on $80,000 bond. Police said he told them he was looking for some quick cash and that he fenced the computers shortly after the break-in at The Muse.

“That’s where he was led,” said Metro Detective Ricky Winfrey. They didn’t say who led Osbourne there because they said they are still wrapping up loose ends.

Police said Cheek and Rucker were the buyers and have been charged with felony theft.

“All of them are computer geeks is the way they explained it to us, with degrees and backgrounds and all that kind of stuff,” Winfrey said.

The laptops bought by the man in Goodlettsville had new hard drives installed, but police did not know who installed them.

Police said the personal information on the hard drives had not been accessed and police said they did not anticipate any more surprises or any more arrests.
