A suspect in the December break-in and theft at the Metro Election Commission is now in police custody.

Robert Osbourne, 45, turned himself in to police Thursday after police issued an arrest warrant for him on Wednesday.

"His demeanor was calm. He was very co-operative with me," said Metro police Detective Rick Mavity.

Osbourne was identified as a burglary suspect in the election commission break-in through a DNA match. Police said blood at the scene matched a sample on file for Osbourne, who has on parole.

It is still unclear what he did with the laptops that contained Davidson County’s registered voters' information. However, police said they have recovered a computer router that Osbourne stole.

"He's given us some things that we need to look at, and that's where we're focused on now," said Mavity.

Osbourne lived on and off at the Nashville Rescue Mission, but according to the police report he's also a painter from Cleveland, Ohio.

When Osbourne was arrested for a trespassing charge on Jefferson Street in Nashville, he told the officer, "He just stopped in to smoke his crack."

Osbourne also told police that he broke into the election building at 9:45 p.m. Christmas Eve. Security guard Brandon Murphy had started his shift at 6 p.m., but said he didn’t hear anything.

"It's unfortunate. I'm sorry the whole thing happened," said Murphy.

Osbourne's bond was set at $80,000, but there is a parole violation hold on him.

Osbourne told police he didn't realize he broke into the election commission office until he watched television reports.
