When you’ve got to go, you got to go. But Metro police Officer Earnest Fields couldn't go and was fired.
Video: Word On The Street (1/11/08)Two years ago, the veteran officer was ordered to take a random drug test. You probably know what's required with a drug test. But, there was a problem for the one-time UT football star. Fields spent three hours at the private drug-testing facility.Four times he went to the restroom and tried to produce a urine sample, and four times he failed, despite drinking water. Fields even reportedly offered to a blood or hair drug test, but the facility only did urine tests. That turned out to be a major problem for the cop.Metro police's medical consultant found no medical reason for Field's failure. Two months later he was fired and accused of refusing to submit to the drug test. The police policy said any refusal to submit to a test shall be considered a positive test. The 10-year-veteran appealed his termination, and finally, in November, administrative law Judge William Reynolds ruled in favor of Fields. He held that the police department didn't prove that the officer refused to submit to the testing. The law judge ordered Fields to be returned to duty and given full back pay and benefits.Metro has 60 days to appeal the decision.Fields has not returned to duty as yet.
