Wackenhut: Subcontractor Responsible For Break-In

Laptops Containing Personal Information Stolen From Election Commission

The security company hired by Metro to guard its government buildings said a subcontractor is to blame for a break-in at the Election Commission.

A laptop with the Social Security numbers of every registered voter in the county was taken in the theft.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Wackenhut said the theft happened under the watch of their subcontractor, Specialized Security Consultants in Wilson County, and that they are not Wackenhut employees.

The statement also said Wackenhut has already complied with a request from Mayor Karl Dean’s office to take Specialized Security Consultants off of Metro's security detail and that it has replaced them with Wackenhut guards.

In response to a Metro audit that claims government buildings were not always guarded when claimed, Wackenhut said they will reimburse Metro for any billed hours that were not worked and recover their money from Specialized Security Consultants.
