Video: Guard Fired, Council Meets In Wake Of Commission Break-InThe laptops contain the full Social Security numbers of more than 330,000 Davidson County voters.Channel 4 learned that the security guard who was supposed to be on duty the night of the break-in was fired last Thursday.
The guard worked for Specialized Security Consultants in Mount Juliet. The Election Commission on Thursday started sending out letters about the break-in.The letters inform residents about the break-in and offer information on credit protection.Council Members Tour Election Commission OfficeMetro Council members toured the Election Commission office on Thursday afternoon to try to get a better understanding of how the personal information was stolen.“I wish I could say that they were all locked up. We have 80 of them locked up right now. We have 81 all together, and I guess in the heat of Christmas, it was just something that was probably forgotten, and everybody makes mistakes. I don’t think anybody’s trying to say it’s somebody’s fault particularly,” said Eddie Bryan of the Davidson County Election Board. One of the laptops that was stolen had been left out on a table. Some of the information on the computer wasn’t encrypted.“I think IT (information technology) may have some culpability as well because I know that they have said that they’re not responsible for encryption of data. But they are the IT department. I worked in corporate America for a long time, and I can tell you IT is into your business all the time,” said Metro Councilman Jim Gotto.Multiple problems have been cited that led to the break-in, including security at the Election Commission and the information technology department.
