Nearly a thousand people shrugged off the cold weather for a 5K race downtown as a way to help people with disabilities.

The Resolution Run is a unique event that puts running and recycling to the test.

Tommy Mcauley was at the event with his daughter, Mary, who has cerebral palsy. They were there to raise awareness and donate recyclable stuff that people with disabilities can use.

"It really helps out with the resource they offer in helping kids out with disabilities with equipment they need. We've benefited from that a whole lot, so that's why we're here to run," said Mcauley.

As the race began, each step, every yard covered was an important stride for organizations like United Cerebral Palsy and those striving to lead meaningful lives.

"We recycle wheelchairs, prone standers, gate trainers, all kinds of equipment that people with all types of disabilities use," said Executive Director of UCP Nashville Deana Claiborne.

"The number one thing I want to get across with doing this for her is to see that she can get out there and do stuff and not just sit at home in a wheelchair for people to feel sorry for her," said Mcauley.

As they cross the finish line, the time clock could only register numbers, not the enormous heart and soul shown by these special racers.

"The best way I can put it is that we're never guaranteed a tomorrow. Especially with Mary's condition, you never know what might happen to her down the road ... It's a blessing for me to be able to do something like this for her, no matter what the weather is," said Mcauley.

Some wheelchairs can cost up to $7,000.

In addition to donations, volunteers are needed to help build wheelchair ramps and get the donated equipment ready to distribute to area families.
