The building also houses the water and codes departments.

On Christmas Eve, thieves used a rock to break out a window to Metro Election Commissioner Ray Barrett’s office, police said. Officials said they did not hear about the break-in until more than 24 hours later.

Barrett said a computer router, a cell phone, a couple of radios and two laptops were taken. He said one of the laptops contained voter files on every registered voter in Davidson County. The files contain information such as addresses and Social Security numbers.

"It does not have the whole Social Security number, it has the last four digits," Barrett said.

Barrett said the thefts won’t affect any upcoming elections but raised the question of security.

“The security department has been here and of course the general services. And so, they’re all analyzing and trying to figure out what happened, and, of course, I think there will be some additional security after this,” Barrett said.

Officials said security was on duty during the break-in. The company in charge of security, Specialized Security Consultants, said it could not comment.
