Channel 4 has learned that police have a DNA match between Jerome Barrett, a man already in custody, and the Marcia Trimble crime scene.

Trimble was abducted, raped and found dead 32 years ago after an exhaustive search in the Green Hills area of Nashville.

No arrest has been made as of Monday evening, but Channel 4 sources said evidence that police has gathered is incriminating.

For a week and a half, Channel 4 News has talked about Barrett's arrest record and the time he served in prison. He was a career criminal in the mid-1970s who served 26 years in prison. However, there were a lot of questions that remained about what he's been doing in Memphis since his release in 2002.

On the north side of Memphis, Barrett's modest brick home sits empty. Two weeks ago, police showed up on his doorstep and arrested him, leaving neighbors shocked.

"He hollered over here and asked if we would call his father to tell his father that somebody was trying to pin something on him. That's when we called for his father to come over here,” said Barrett's neighbor Linda Jones.

Jones has known Barrett for more than two years. He was supposed to spend Thanksgiving at her house but instead he was in jail and facing a murder charge.

"He's just been the sweetest person since he's been over here, just like a father figure. My father passed about five years ago, (and) he was just like a father figure. He’s known all over the neighborhood as a (good) guy," said Jones.

Neighbors said Barrett, a part-time landscaper, did yard work in the area, participated in the neighborhood watch program and was president of the local homeowners association, a group of neighbors that band together to fight crime.

"Everybody in the block club became enthused about it because he was our first male president. We thought maybe with the male we may be able to get more done,” said Barrett's neighbor Juanita Beal.

Channel 4 tracked down several of Barrett's relatives who had nothing to say to the media.

As for those who lived next to him, they said Barrett was incapable of hurting anyone.

“No way, there's no way possible. From what I've known of him, I can not see it. I just don't believe he did it in the first place because of what I know about him now,” said Jones.

Barrett has spent a great deal of time in recent years caring for his elderly mother who is in poor health.

Channel 4 spoke to her, and although she asked not to appear on camera, she called Barrett a good son.

During his five years as a free man, Barrett hasn't committed any additional crimes that police are aware of.
