MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Some Murfreesboro residents may lose their favorite reading spots if an ordinance is passed by the city.
Video: Furniture Ban Could Be Hard To EnforceThe Murfreesboro City Council is thinking about banning certain furniture from people's front porches and yards. It's an attempt to crack down on eyesores, but could prove difficult for police to enforce. Some Middle Tennessee State University students got a new couch from some people who were throwing it out.“We just nabbed what we saw,” said Andrew Masterson. It has pet scratches and no legs, but it's a comfortable reading spot."It's just comfortable to be out here and hang out,” Masterson said."To us, this is just, decorating our porch,” Robert Huber said.Under a new code section in Murfreesboro, the students could get a ticket."We're responding to complaints that we've gotten from neighbors who don't like to see furniture that's supposed to be indoors, outdoors,” said Murfreesboro spokesman Chris Shofner.Specifically, the new code section said furniture intended for indoor use can't be in a yard or on a porch. The rule is clearly meant to clean up neighborhood eyesores, but is it enforceable? For those up on design trends, they know that indoor-outdoor furniture is popular right now because upholstery fabric is sun and rainproof. So are tables and rugs, so, is there really a clear line what belongs where?
