NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Metro police said they have made an arrest in the slaying of a Vanderbilt student -- 32 years later.
Video: Man's Arrest Reopens 32-Year-Old Slaying CaseSarah Des Prez, daughter of well-known Vanderbilt medicine professor Dr. Roger Des Prez, was slain at her apartment in 1975.Reports at the time went into details about her slaying describing how she was smothered by a blood-stained pillow at her apartment.
Her body was found by her father and brother at her apartment.More than 30 years later, Metro cold case detectives arrested Jerome Barrett in Memphis in connection with her slaying.Barrett was released from prison five years ago after serving time for raping a Belmont student also in 1975."This case, 30-plus years old and a suspect has been brought to justice,” said Metro police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford.Some old bedding turned out to be the key, according to police.Des Prez was also a graduate of Hillsboro High School, according to an article written at the time.Police said the arrest was made due to scientific developments. They would not give details, but the article goes on to say that Des Prez’s hair sample and blood evidence were taken at the time to the Federal Bureau of Investigation crime laboratory.Barrett is now in custody in Nashville.
