A couple said they’ve been set apart by what seems like discrimination because they were almost charged extra fees based on where the guests for their wedding come from.

While trying to figure out a date and place for a friend's wedding, Patricia Welsh said she was left wondering what day and age she was in.

“I just couldn't believe she was being so discriminatory,” she said.

Welsh's friends are from the southeast Asian country of Laos. They wanted to have their wedding at Smyrna's Towne Center because it offers Laotian cuisine.

But Welsh said the center told her having the wedding there would involve an extra $500 deposit, a possible cleanup fee and two sheriff's deputies because of problems with the last Laotian wedding.

“They had put beer bottles in the toilet and flipped over trash cans. She said that the bartender wasn’t distributing the alcohol correctly so there was vomit in the ballroom,” Welsh said.

She said the reasoning didn't sit well and she filed a complaint with the town’s mayor.

The city attorney got a copy of Welsh's complaint and said the situation is a misunderstanding.

The Towne Center said it couldn't have even accepted an extra deposit or cleanup fee if they wanted to because that sort of thing has to go through the City Council first.

On Wednesday afternoon, Welsh said she spoke with the city attorney and got the information first hand.

She said she also learned that due to her complaint, the Towne Center has changed its policies.

Rather than deciding if parties require guards on a case-by-case basis, it will be determined by how many guests are there.

Welsh said she is still disappointed that anyone would let one party define a people.

“I just can’t imagine anyone having that kind of mindset in our society,” she said.
