The calendar reads autumn, but the consequences from this summer's drought are mounting.

Video: Crews Busy Removing Trees Dead From Drought

The government is being forced to spend time and money in Tennessee to cut down hundreds of trees that have died from lack of water.

So far, Metro Parks Crews have had to remove 25 dead trees from Centennial Park since June.

Officials said by the end of the year, they'll likely take away 200 more trees from parks across Davidson County.

For now, the city said there is enough money in the budget to do the job, while replacement will depend on the size, age and location of the tree.

In parks and on parkways, hundreds of dead trees line Tennessee's interstates.

"In western Davidson County, there are hundreds of trees people can see on the slopes that we have to remove," said Winston Gaffron of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

But the job is so massive, that the project will have to be contracted to an outside company, and the money will come from an emergency budget that deals with extreme weather.

"I've been with TDOT for 35 years. This is the worst I've ever seen it," said Gaffron.

Even though dead trees are proving to be a big loser in the drought, there may be some benefits come winter time. Officials from TDOT said less moisture will mean less potholes on the road.

As far as timetable for removing the trees along the interstate, officials said it's an ongoing project that will take place between now and the spring.
