CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- A disease that has killed thousands of deer is spreading to cattle, officials said.
Video: Cattle Being Killed By Drought-Fueled Deer DiseaseThe drought is being blamed for the disease, EHD, and it has now killed seven cows in Kentucky.“What we’re seeing are just sporadic reports of incidents where maybe we have cattle herds that are co-mingling with deer at shared water sources are getting exposed to the virus and they can also become sick with it,” said Dr. Wade Northington of the Murray State University Breathitt Veterinary Center.
Northington said his lab at the Breathitt Veterinary Clinic has seen several cattle from southern Kentucky and Montgomery County in Tennessee test positive for EHD.Sometimes the cows get better, sometimes they don’t, Northington said.Concerns are growing and adding pressure to an already stressed group of cattle farmers still reeling from the drought.“It’s just adding insult to injury, and what’s already been a bad economic year for them,” Northington said. The disease has farmers searching to find out more information on how to prevent it, if possible.“Well, anytime there’s something like that effects the cattle industry, it’s a concern. But, (you) just have to stay on top of it as close as you can. You know, take it as it comes,” said cattle worker Dwight Boje.Northington said farmers who believe their cattle may be infected should take them to a vet.
