SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. -- Authorities on Tuesday captured a murder suspect in Clarksville after he escaped the Robertson County jail on Monday morning.
Video: Murder Suspect Escapee Caught In ClarksvilleClarksville police hostage negotiators and Robertson County detectives surrounded Joe Thomas "Boo" Baker III, 19, in a house on Daniels Street. After a two-hour period of negotiations with police, Baker surrendered.
“The guard let him out. They just left the door unlocked and he got out,” said Baker’s cousin Eric Hassell, who was at the house.Hassell said he didn’t believe Baker’s story when Baker showed up there.“He walked in, said he made bond. I looked at him like, ‘Yeah, right.’ Then he just told me what happened. They just left his door unlocked. I mean, what are you going to do if they leave your door unlocked and you in jail? You’re going to go for it,” Hassell said.Clarksville authorities were thankful for the safe surrender.“They made contact with him, talked to him for a while over the telephone, and he did come out of the house without incident,” said Clarksville police Sgt. Cheryl Anderson. Authorities Continue To Investigate Escape Capt. Jerrell Jones said jailers noticed Baker was missing from the jail around 2 a.m. on Monday. Baker is one of two men charged in the killing of a Springfield man in June.Robertson County police said they are still looking to determine how Baker escaped the jail.Officials said the cause of the escape appeared to be "human error," but did not give further details.Baker was being held on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.Police said they checked a house on Raines Avenue and also a nearby trailer park but could not locate him on Monday.According to police, Baker engaged in disruptive behavior on Sept. 11, and cut his wrists with a razor.Authorities then filed a motion to have him transferred to a state prison because the Robertson County Jail is not maximum security and cannot protect Baker from causing harm to himself and others. The motion to have Baker moved lists him as psychotic.“I believe they’ve saved me some money in having to formulate an insanity defense,” said Baker’s attorney, Fletcher Long.“If I had learned that he had made an attempt on his life, I would not have been surprised. But learning that he has escaped from custody was a surprise,” Long said.Robertson County schools were put on heightened alert for a time during the search on Monday.Baker, along with Rafael Utley, are accused of kidnapping, robbing and shooting a man in June, police said. The man later died from his injuries.Baker and Utley were being held on $500,000 bond each and police said Utley is still in jail.
