NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Hundreds of postal workers around Nashville are finding out their personal information was stolen three months ago.
Video: Stolen Laptop Contained Postal Workers' Personal InfoU.S. Postal Service inspectors are looking into how the computer was stolen as postal workers are asking why it took so long for them to find out.“One of my questions (is) why did it take so long for someone to contact us?” said Levan Butler of the Postal Workers Union.Butler is vice president of the union and just got a letter informing him that a post office laptop containing his name and Social Security number was stolen in May.“Something missing that long. Our identity could already be stolen,” he said.U.S. Postal Service officials won't say how many workers are affected or where or how the computer was stolen, but told employees across the southeast to take precaution.A representative said it took them three months to notify employees because at first, the post office wasn’t sure what was on the computer.Postal inspectors are investigating, but Levan said the union is meeting and wanting answers.“Did everybody get a letter or what? Does this affect everybody at the postal service or some of us? I don’t know yet what we're going to do (to) find out some of those answers,” he said.In the letter, the postal service did apologize to employees but said there was no indication that any of the information on the laptop had been compromised. The post office said the information on the computer would be difficult to access because of security protections on the system.
