Communities are struggling with the issue of managing expansion and traffic without destroying neighborhoods and town centers.

The city of Spring Hill’s leaders are meeting with the public to talk about how their 30-year plan will affect homes and businesses.

Thirty years ago, Spring Hill had 685 people. According to the city Web site, the current estimated population was almost 27,000 in April 2007. Thirty years from now the population is projected to have 75,000.

It's one of the fastest-growing towns in the south, and new subdivisions are popping up everywhere.

To cope with the growth, the city's written a "major thoroughfare plan."

"What I want to accomplish is to get our road network, our thoroughfare plan, on paper," said Spring Hill Mayor Denny Leverette.

The plan won't be fully implemented until the year 2030 and is already raising some concerns among the public.

Some subdivision roads will turn into larger connector roads, like New Port Royal Road.

Another area of Spring Hill that will feel the backlash of progress is its downtown.

Highway 31 would have four lanes, meaning some historic homes and businesses could be torn down.

"Unfortunately, there will be potentially some homes (that could be affected) … There will be some homes and some businesses where the frontage could be affected," said Leverette.

None of this plan is official. City leaders are still asking for feedback about the best way to grow without too many growing pains.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Spring Hill City Hall. The public is invited.
