NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A dispute in a Nashville courtroom led to the arrest of an elected official Wednesday.
Video: Juvenile Court Clerk Charged With ContemptJuvenile Court Clerk Vic Lineweaver was arrested and cited for contempt of court. He was taken to the Criminal Justice Center where he was booked and released.According to court officials and I-Team reporter Jeremy Finley, Lineweaver was asked by judges last week to produce files that they wanted purged from the system. Lineweaver was not able to produce them, so they held the hearing this week.
After two files were missing Wednesday, judges ruled that he was in contempt of court until he could find the two files.“You have left me no alternative other than to take you into custody,” the judge said. One of the files was found while Lineweaver was in custody and another was found in another clerk’s office. The clerk who located the one of the missing files said Lineweaver’s arrest was all for show.“I don’t think it solved anything, I don’t think it fixed anything. But, apparently someone wanted to have that show, so they had it,” said deputy clerk Matt Drury.Lineweaver was released as soon as the files were found.“I thinks it’s a total embarrassment for the juvenile court, and I hope it’s an embarrassment for the clerk’s office,” said Juvenile Court Judge Betty Adams Green. The I-Team has been following complaints about Lineweaver for months and according to Finley, juvenile referees (judges) have been complaining for a while that Lineweaver’s office was incompetent and that they continuously had files missing and other problems.“That’s their jurisdiction. They wanted to do it, that’s all I can say about that. Is it fair? No, maam. Did I try to meet with them several times? Yes, maam,” Lineweaver said.“We cannot continue to stop court and hunt for files, tell people they have to go home and come back because we can’t find a file or we can’t find a record that someone’s been served or we can’t find a record of payment. We should not have to do that, the public deserves better,” Green said.Lineweaver said that one of the files was found in the office of the referees. He said he would issue a statement on Thursday and that he had confidence in his staff.
