FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- The extreme drought across Tennessee is forcing communities to take drastic measures to conserve water.
Video: Jeff Fisher Has Water Service Shut OffLast week, the city of Franklin followed through on a threat and turned off the water to six customers. On Monday, the city went after almost 200 more customers, including Tennessee Titans head Coach Jeff Fisher.
Amber Stormberg's yard is one of the few in Legions Ridge Estates in Franklin that still has a hit of green grass, and she said she would like for it to stay that way.“A lawn is very expensive to replace, especially an acre,” she said. She has a sprinkler system to water her lawn, but it is some of her neighbors and other Franklin residents with automatic irrigation systems that have now been shut off.“I don't think that's appropriate. You can get warning(s) and fines, but shutting it off isn't appropriate,” she said. The 200 customers whose water was turned off basically had two different meters: one for their regular water and the other one for their irrigation systems. What the city did was to go around and place locks on the irrigations systems so they won't be able to water their lawns."It will help us refill our tanks and reservoirs. We gained a million-and-a-half to 2 million gallons a day by cutting off those irrigation meters,” city of Franklin representative Monique McCullough said.City officials said the summer drought is to blame for the measure. Many water customers said they haven't been too happy and have voiced their disappointment with the city.“We had a lot of people who were concerned about what they could or couldn't do,” McCullough said.Stormberg said she is just hoping for enough rain to put an end to the water restrictions so she can get back to watering her lawn like she use to.“Instead of having your water shut off, you compromise by watering it less,” she said.
