A chemical leak that caused a stink in a Franklin creek last winter is still causing problems.

The smell is gone, but one of the chemicals is still seeping into the Harpeth River.

Pam Davee said she cares about pollution in the river -- the kind that’s visible and the kind that isn’t.

"There's a problem right here and it's still flowing,” she said.

The problem is that acetone has been leaking into the river for months.

Last winter, residents started complaining about a smell along Liberty Creek.

The polluting element was acetone and tolulene from the Egyptian Lacquers plant leaking into the creek and into the Harpeth.

Crews dug trenches at Liberty Creek to keep the leaks from reaching the Harpeth, and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation tests show that the trench has been successful.

But Davee said acetone is still making it into the Harpeth from other leaks.

According to experts, the acetone causes the water’s oxygen level to decrease and allows the easier growth of algae, which is visible in the creek.

Egyptian Lacquers is supposed to turn in a cleanup plan to the state on Tuesday.

TDEC said that until the cleanup plan is approved, nothing can be done to stop the acetone leak.

“It’s not enough yet because it's not stopped,” Davee said.

The drought has made a bad situation in the Harpeth worse, but Davee said fixing the leak is the best way to make the river a healthy place for wildlife.

"The really important thing about this chemical is that it's making it worse than it would be under these already difficult conditions,” she said.

Any plan will be available for public comment before the state allows the company to begin cleaning up the groundwater and plugging the leaks.
