Audit May Answer Questions In Radioactive Dumping

Low-Level Waste Dumping Occurs In Rutherford County

The state of California is digging deeper into a loophole that led to some of its low-level radioactive waste being buried in Tennessee.

The Channel 4 I-Team reported in June about waste from a now-closed pharmaceutical company in Irvine being sent to a Tennessee landfill.

Twelve California lawmakers called for a thorough investigation and for an audit.

The audit has been approved and is under way at a cost to that state of more than $200,000.

The review is expected to take several months and could shine more light on the growing controversy in Tennessee.

Tennessee has scheduled its first public meeting on its bulk-survey dumping program July 17 in Murfreesboro.

Other Tennessee Nuclear Facility Makes National Headlines

Tennessee is also making national headlines for a dangerous nuclear spill that the public didn’t know about until now.

It happened in upper east Tennessee at Nuclear Fuel Services, a company that makes uranium fuel.

It was so bad, the Erwin, Tenn., company had to close for seven months as a result.

Thirty-five liters of highly radioactive fuel leaked out of an unsealed drain last March into a glove box for workers and onto the floor.

The accident and all the reports connected to it were stamped “for official use only,” which is one step below secret.

Under pressure from members of Congress, the details of the Erwin accident have been released and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is being ordered to review what sort of information it is keeping from the public.
