NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- It was all fun and music at Nashville’s riverfront on Wednesday night, but the Fourth of July was hardly festive for many people throughout Nashville.
Video: Fireworks Cause Complaints, 911 CallsMany people said that those who were shooting off their own fireworks pose a real danger, and that the police need to do more to stop them.A church annex is one of two structures damaged Wednesday night due to fireworks. Some fireworks smashed through the window of Progressive Sunrise Baptist Church in east Nashville, causing burned blinds and a scorched rug.Emergency calls came in from all over town."They're down here shooting these big things. They're coming up here, and they're flying them into my trees. Everywhere," said one 911 caller.Rebecca Alford was one of the many who called police because of the fireworks."I jumped off my couch. It sounded like a bomb was going off," said Alford.Despite a drought and close proximity of homes, many ignored a citywide ban on fireworks. With only one citation written for fireworks possession last 4th of July week, some are wondering why police don't do more."More citations and very strict fines (are needed)," said Alford."The police department tries to be somewhat tolerant, except when we get neighborhood complaints," said Metro police spokesman Don Aaron.Police said instead of writing citations they often just take the fireworks away.A mobile home was also damaged by fireworks on Murfreesboro Road. Two people are in the hospital because of Wednesday night’s fireworks celebrations.A 14-year-old boy from Rock Island, Tenn., will lose his right hand because of an accident. Also a 66-year-old man is in critical condition after an accident making his own fireworks.Vanderbilt Hospital officials said they treated a total of eight people for fireworks related injuries.
