NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- With the drought and density of homes in Nashville, the public has heard many warnings from police about the dangers of shooting off fireworks.
Video: Few Cited For Use Of Fireworks Despite LawHowever, Channel 4 discovered the number of actual citations for fireworks in Davidson County last year might surprise the public."Fireworks are illegal in Davidson County. The person who is responsible for shooting off the fireworks can be held responsible with a misdemeanor citation," said police spokesman Don Aaron. With fireworks stands accessible nearly everywhere in middle Tennessee, Channel 4 researched to find out how many people were actually cited for possessing fireworks in Davidson County the week of Independence Day last year.WSMV-TV found there was only one citation written by police last year for fireworks possession in Davidson County during the week of the Fourth of July.Terrance Anthony Felt was cited for shooting off fireworks from his balcony with his kids. There was also not a single citation written for disturbing the peace due to fireworks for that entire week."Quite frankly, they're rare," said Aaron.Police acknowledge citations are rarely given out, but fireworks are often taken away for residents."Sometimes it's a case of an officer confiscating the fireworks and leaving," said Aaron.Records also show that Felt ended up having the citation dismissed.
