A Channel 4 viewer’s complaint about a towing company brought that company and its history into focus recently.

Watch: Towing Company Investigation Raises Questions

Darenda Owens said she was parked in a lot off Division Street on May 23 and was towed even though there was no sign on the spot in which she parked. She said there were other signs on the lot that said no parking, but the space in which she parked was not specifically marked.

Owens said City Towing had already hauled away two cars. She said when she called City Towing, workers there told her it would cost $95 to get her car back.

Owens called Channel 4 News problem solver reporter Chris Tatum to help get her money back.

After finding no evidence that Owens had been wronged, Tatum learned that City Towing has been in trouble with Metro before and found other things drivers who are towed should know.

Metro records show that a judge revoked its license in February 2006 but reinstated it while the company appealed.

On May 18, the judge revoked City Towing's license for good, but a letter Metro's legal department sent to City Towing's lawyer said City Towing can still operate for 30 days after that judge's order.

Its license is good until June 18.

Licensing Commission Offers Advice

For drivers whose cars are towed, Metro's Transportation Licensing Commission said to check the towing ticket.

Before a company can tow, it must get the owner’s permission in writing.

For drivers who have parked illegally, the property owner where the car is parked can sign to have it towed.

Police also can sign off on it.

Metro said it requires a signature every time for every tow and that the tow truck driver can't sign for anybody but himself.
