MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The state is now promising a public meeting to address the disposal of low-level radioactive waste at Murfreesboro's Middle Point landfill.Channel 4's I-Team investigation uncovered the little-known practice that has been approved by the state for 20 years. This week the city of Murfreesboro confirmed it has sent off a drinking water sample to be analyzed for uranium. On Thursday, the state told state Rep. Bart Gordon it has taken samples of the garbage runoff that it will test for radioactivity.
This action is something that has never been done or required before. On the federal level, Gordon has asked the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate the safety of land filling low-level rubble. He said he will know within days when the federal officials plan to make a visit.
