MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Murfreesboro Water Department has decided to sample its drinking water for uranium in response to a Channel 4 I-Team investigation. The city won't have the water results for at least another month. The Channel 4 investigation uncovered a state program that has allowed low-level radioactive waste to be dumped at the Middle Point landfill for almost 20 years. The landfill is in close proximity to where the city draws drinking water from the Stones River.
Water quality officials said they are required by the state to test for radioactivity only once every four years. They said no water results have been troublesome before, but the most recent sample did show a very slight elevation above the detection limit for what is called gross beta radiation.
