I-Team Findings Have Lawmakers Talking

Video Shows Manager Telling Producer To Get Fake Work ID

What Channel 4 exposed in an undercover investigation has lawmakers speaking about the illegal immigration issue.

Video: Lawmakers React To I-Team's Findings

The I-Team went undercover to see what would happen when someone tries to get a job who appears to have no legal U.S. documentation.

The I-Team sent a Channel 4 producer, who is Hispanic, to businesses all over town to see if it was possible to get a job even if he did not have papers proving he can work in the United States.

The first location the undercover producer was sent to was a construction site.

"Hello. I'm looking for a job," the producer said to one of the workers at the site.

The site didn't have any openings but the employee told the producer he wouldn't need immigration papers if they were hiring.

"And you ask for papers?” the producer said.

The man said "no."

A tree trimming company wasn't hiring either, but the supervisor advised the producer on what he might need if they were.

"I'm in need of a job, and so, do you have to have papers or what?" the producer asked.

"Well, just with fake papers. Fake papers, I believe," the man said.

Everywhere the undercover producer went, employers or employees seemed to be talking about and even suggesting that the producer get fake immigration papers.

The Channel 4 producer was sent to another construction site.

When he was told they weren’t hiring, a man at the site told him he might have a chance at area restaurants.

"They hire in restaurants. There's a Mexican restaurant over here you should ask. You might have a chance," the worker said.

The I-Team sent the producer to a national fast-food chain restaurant.

Moments after the producer walked in the door, he was hired.

"We need a day shift," the manager told the supervisor.

"Hire him,” the supervisor said.

"And papers, what do you ask for?" the producer said.

"A card and Social Security, do you have any?" the manager asked.

"No," the producer said.

The manager then asked if the producer had any fake papers.

The producer asked the manager if fake immigration papers would be OK.

"Yes. Everybody in here has those. They don't check over here," the manager said.

The manager said they didn't have any but advised the Channel 4 producer that he needed to buy some fake papers.

Channel 4 had state Reps. Mike Turner and Donna Rowland listen to Channel 4's undercover tapes that showed the fast-food manager explain how easy it is to pass fake documents off as the real thing.

"They don't check anything. They just look at them. But here, I think nobody has them. Only you need to buy some," said the manager.

"The fact that company reps are out promoting fake documents, that's an illegal action in and of itself," said Rowland after seeing the tape.

The lawmakers said they had heard about these types of problems and have written bills on Capitol Hill regarding the issue. But they said they had never actually seen the problem firsthand until the Channel 4 I-team caught it on tape.

Lawmakers said Channel 4's video showed why both legal and illegal immigrants are suffering from behavior often heard about, but rarely seen.

"We have legal residents, legal citizens, legal immigrants (who are) needing jobs. We have companies out there saying go get fake documents and we'll hire you. That's absurd," said Rowland.

Channel 4 visited these businesses only one time.

Since this could have been a one-time occurrence, WSMV decided not to name them.

The lawmakers that Channel 4 spoke to said this video is proof that local governments can't wait for the federal government to fix this problem.

There are several bills state lawmakers are working on, including one that would force every Tennessee employer to check a federal database to make sure their workers are legitimate.
