NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A traffic stop for a broken headlight turned into a possible immigration bust for Metro police overnight.
A van was stopped just after midnight on Interstate 24 East near Briley Parkway.Officers ran the license plate of the vehicle and discovered the federal government had an alert out on the van.An agent with the immigration and customs enforcement was called to help investigate.Police said inside they found nine illegal immigrants and $5,000 in cash, and said a police dog smelled drug residue.Authorities said none of the men spoke English nor had identification. Police believe the men could be part of an immigrant smuggling ring. The nine men have been turned over to the local immigration customs enforcement, better known as the I.C.E. unit.
